ab Initio Unit: Atributos personales

Usually this is our first unit when starting our ab Initio courses, along with greetings and introduction dialogues.

The guide from IB recommends the following break down for this particular unit:

  • Casa: habitaciones, mobiliario
  • Dirección
  • Edad
  • Fecha de nacimiento
  • Idiomas
  • Nacionalidad

It is crucial that we introduce our students in a comprehensive manner to such important verbs in Spanish as Ser / Estar / Tener.

It is the perfect time to start talking about the difference between Ser and Estar. If you want to know more about this, please click here.

Something I always connect with this unit is body parts, if you want to know more about this, please click here.

In this presentation below you will find tons of visual resources to learn/teach personal information, basic numbers, physical descriptions and character along with activities.

The adjectives in Spanish is something perfect to teach at early stages and practice agreement, ser/estar, etc.

It is important also to highlight that gender is variable from language to language, which can be masculine in German could be feminine in Spanish and viceversa, so they understand better language differences linked to cultural differences.

I did put together a presentation based on visual learning / comprehensible input to explain the articles to my students, you can find it here.

ab Initio Unit: Compras

This unit is really rich in content. There are lots of new words to learn and connect to prior knowledge.

It is also a great opportunity to review some basic content such as numbers, colors, basic questions, greetings, basic dialogues, etc.

Study your words first using Quizlet and then start with the presentation. In the presentation you will find a lot of opportunities to interact with your students, make the questions and let them answer, review their answers, let them come up with a dialogue on their own. Practice situations that might arise during their orals. For instance, a day shopping in the mall, shopping with the family, include daily routines, etc.

The presentation comes with activities to help internalize the content, prioritizing the oral interaction.
