Listening Comprehension - Rutina diaria - El lorito Pedrito

Imagen relacionadaThe listening component has definitely gained presence in our IB classes with the inclusion as an important piece of our assessments. This activity can be used as in-class work or as a flipped classroom tool. I've tried both approaches with good results, probably, my students like it better when assigned as outside of class work.

This activity is based on Daily Routines vocabulary and structures and help students refine their knowledge on this unit.

After finishing this activity you can do multiple follow-up activities, such as:

  • Writing: Describe and sequence the daily routine of the lorito Pedrito paying attention to time connectors/sequencers
  • Speaking: Talk about how his day look like with a partner and compare it with your daily routine

ab Initio Unit: Rutina diaria

Daily Routines is a difficult topic at early stages because of reflexive verbs, sometimes our students struggle with the concept of what reflexive means. So that is something to pay a lot of attention to when teaching this unit.

Daily routines is perfect for making connections to the rest of the themes in your ab Initio course.
For example, we can talk or connect education and sports, global issues, time, etc.

But at first, get on learning your words for the unit with Quizlet:

Acquiring vocabulary through opposites [Antonymy]

The way our brain works is through connecting ideas, concepts. Everything we storage in our minds is connected, categorized, related to some other knowledge. That's why is really important not to present the vocabulary to our students standing alone, disconnected or out of context. The natural way we learn is by the context, so we want to apply that to our language classes. The factors implied in the acquisition of vocabulary in a language are multiple, so, again, the more we bring to the table in the same activity the better for our students to learn that key vocabulary.
In this case, this image helps understand the vocabulary through visuals, antonymy and context.
This image is a piece of a unit about Daily routines, which includes reflective verbs. Through different colors and pictures illustrating the actions we try to make the acquisition of this difficult concept easier for our students.
The last thing I have incorporated into the visual is the concept of opposites, which is one more connection reinforcing the learning of the concepts.
