ab Initio Unit: Problemas ambientales

This unit focuses on Environmental problems. As it can seem a bit technical at the beginning it turns not that complicated if you connect it to their other subjects: Environmental Science, Biology, Geography, etc

Usually, most of the content of this unit is well known by our students, we just have to activate it in the target language and for that, it is fundamental we use their prior knowledge.

ab Initio Unit: El tiempo atmósferico

The weather fits into many categories, but being in ab Initio it ties to oral skills as it is a common question that may come up during the oral exam. It also connects naturally to environment, climate change, global warming, etc.

This is a express-unit, it must be something quick in your class, nothing you spend too much time on. You can always go back during another lesson and re-practice, re-teach a particular aspect if you identify that need in your class.

The unit is based in interaction, first students are exposed to some important vocabulary, after that comes a presentation with key questions that may arise in a conversation and provides students with opportunities to practice those communicative situations. The unit ends with a video on weather in Spanish. The assessment I do in this unit is an interactive conversation about weather related to environmental problems, geography (what's the weather like in ... ?), time (seasons), cities, etc.

Eco-educación MYP Unit

This unit and topic are all over the place, so please combine it with materials you might have and/or find in another site, from a colleague, etc

I also have this "same" unit for my ab Initio and B classes, as a part of the "Global issues" but this very one is more focused on Middle Years Program. There is more Inquiry process, actually, the unit starts over with a prediction activity. They have to make questions on images related to their unit and after that each team produces a prediction for the unit. Perfect activity to mix inquiry and language [we all know that sometimes this is hard].

As always, if you have something else you think might fit with these materials, please send it along. Resources:

Spanish B Unit: Calentamiento global

This is a topic we always end up going through: global warming, eco-friendly, environmentally friendly... are all concepts we need to cover in today's education. This is my little contribution to the community. Again:

If you have an apple and I have an apple and we exchange these apples then you and I will still have one apple. But if you have an idea and I have an idea an we exchange these ideas, then each of us will have two ideas.
I really agree with this thought. We need to be able to open our classes and our minds to others, especially among teachers, so we can all move up together. Open doors can make a difference in our lives. Nobody is perfect and no-one should expect that from others.

In this case you will find all you need to teach/learn this unit with your IB Spanish SL class. If you think something can be improved, you have materials/resources than can be used along with these ones and/or you are missing something listed below, please let me know.

Spanish B Unit: Hambruna y pobreza

I am going to start this post with a quote from a really inspiring person: George Bernard Shaw.

Brief Unit Planner: a visual approach to curriculum mapping

This is one of my Units for my Spanish B SL Course. I am a visual learner that's why I try my best to put all my documents in a way I can see everything at a glance.
As plain as I can. The simple, the better. This ideas can help us out a lot.
One of the main objectives is to have a full unit in just one page.
If you do Curriculum mapping [and if you don't you should consider it, be a thinker]it's really convenient to synthesize your planning and your ideas to be able to analyze all important information without extra effort. Time is money ;)
One of the best things is to compare your reflections from one year to another. You'll be able to grasp if your classes are evolving or not, the progress you are making as a professional and the direction your teaching is taking.

Remember: to stay positive will help you perform better (around 40% better than average)

This template is based on some similar ones found on Mr. Pak Liam's blog. Take a minute to visit his blog, it's amazing how many things this gentleman get accomplished within just a school year!
